Marad judgment: 62 get life term

Kozhikode: The special court has pronounced the judgment in the Marad violence case here on Thursday. Additional Sessions Judge Babu Mathew P Joseph said that of the 63 accused, 62 will get life imprisonment and one would be sentenced to 5 years jail term. This is for the first time that so many convicts are being given life imprisonment for such a dastardly act. The court has also ordered the convicts to deposit a fine of Rs 25,000. Seemamuantakath Latif was the only member given a lesser punishment as he was found guilty of misusing a place of worship at the Marad beach. The others have been convicted for murder charges. Nine people had been killed in retributory attacks in May 2003 as a sequel to an earlier clash that claimed five lives at Marad, a fishing hamlet south of the city, in the preceding year. The special court had earlier acquitted 76 accused for want of evidence. Elaborate security arrangements were in place around the Court premises since this morning and the 63 convicts were bought to the court under tight security.
